Artist's Description
Cheetah Acinonyx jubatus.
The Cheetah resembles a large muscular greyhound - its long streamlined body is carried on long, thin but powerful legs, which endow it with great speed in the chase. A fully-grown cheetah can reach speeds in excess of 60 mph and can easily outrun any animal over short distances. Its paws too, are almost dog-like, narrow and hard padded they sport only slightly retractable claws, the only one of its type amongst the species of cat, and offer the cat extra grip in its high-speed pursuits. The cheetah unlike other 'Big Cats' does not roar, however it does purr and other vocal sounds range from high pitched yelps and barks to longer chirruping sounds. This was taken on safari in South Africa.

How fortunate you have been! I had some wonderous experiences in Oregon as well, where Dr. Laurie Marker had her "start." We are lucky folks to have absorbed the Cheetah's peaceful magic! They are in my heart forever...

My favorite of the "Big Cats." Love this capture! Pray that they can be saved in the wild! And thank you for the info on the description panel. Precious and unique cats...
Lynn Bolt replied:
Many thanks for your kind comment. The cheetah is my favourite of the big cats as well. An elegant animal. I had the privilege of taking one for a 'walk' in South Aficia at a rescue centre, amazing.
